Derdibin Gnamma
In 2009 Kevan Davis, a Balladong Elder from Wyalkatchem, oversaw the cleaning of Derdibin ngama (Noongar word for rockhole), near Wyalkatchem, providing cultural advice and ensuring the work was done the proper way. The cleanout was conducted by Aboriginal students from C Y O’Connor TAFE, local farmers, WWF and Wheatbelt NRM. Professor Brian Timms, a ngama expert, surveyed the aquatic fauna at Derdibin three times over the year following the clean-up. He found that the species diversity increased during each visit and said all the species he found are common in the region and their presence is indicative of a healthy Wheatbelt ngama. Derdibin ngama is located on a public reserve only accessible via private property. Through the courtesy of the surrounding landholder Kevan has now gained access to the reserve for this project and into the future. Ngama's are an important feature of the Australian environment and they are prominent in the Nyitting (Noongar word for dreaming) for Aboriginal people throughout Australia. Traditionally Aboriginal people managed ngama throughout the Wheatbelt to ensure the health of the country and wildlife as well as ensuring they had access to clean drinking water.
